Statkraft entered the Indian power market through its subsidiary SN Power in 2004 when it acquired 49 per cent of the shares in Malana Power Company Limited (MPCL).
Statkraft is currently involved in two significant hydropower plants in India- Malana and Allain Duhangan, and was the first foreign investor to enter the hydropower section in the country.
Statkraft has an exclusive partnership agreement with Tata Power to jointly develop hydropower projects in the region. Together the two companies hold the license for the 380 MW /1550 GWh Dugar greenfield project in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The feasibility of the project is currently being investigated and potential construction is planned to start in 2016.
